5 Methods to Effectively Cope with Holiday Stress

Coping with stress

The winter holidays are supposed to be a time of joy, and they certainly can be. Yet, stress during this time of year is rampant. There are places to be, family arguments, much money spent, meals to prepare and past memories drudged up. It’s no wonder that holiday stress can easily become overwhelming.

Stress has a profoundly negative effect on the body. It damages the organs, causes pain, raises blood pressure and leaves you open to infections. Those with chronic conditions, such as fibromyalgia and migraine headaches, are particularly vulnerable to flare ups when stressed. Here are 5 useful tips for cutting down on holiday stress and enjoying the season.

Make a list – no need to check it twice

It may simply not be possible to accomplish all your goals and errands this holiday season. After all, you’re only human. It’s very easy to take too much upon yourself.

Create a list of your priorities for the season. If there are crucial presents to buy or parties to attend, put them at the top of the list. Rank items in order of importance and create a realistic cutting off point. If things below the threshold are not accomplished it doesn’t mean you’re a failure. You’ve simply done all you can do. Also, remember to write in some “me time” on your list.

Take a time out

In the midst of the holiday bustle it’s very important to take some time out for yourself. If you’re feeling stressed, it may be time for a quiet evening at home or to watch your favorite movie. You could even schedule a spa day.

If the holiday season is bringing up painful memories or negative emotions, take time to stop and talk with your loved ones. A friend or dear family member can be a valuable support, and talking with them may reassure you and reduce your stress.

Eat right

Of course, rich food and the holidays go hand in hand. Candies, desserts and unhealthy meats abound at just about every meal and gathering. While there’s nothing wrong with a small cup of eggnog or a slice of pumpkin pie, be mindful of your diet this season. Eating right will make you feel better and in turn lessen your stress.

Make sure to get some healthy vegetables on your plate and limit your servings of unhealthy items. If friends or family keep encouraging you to go back for seconds, explain that you’re watching your health and trying to eat right. Your chiropractor is also an excellent source for dietary advice and information about healthy vitamins and supplements.

Exercise

A busy lifestyle doesn’t necessarily lend itself to frequent exercise. In fact, it’s quite easy to get caught up in so many events and errands that exercise slips your mind completely. The cold weather in many areas during this time of year certainly doesn’t help.

Still, keep exercise in the forefront of your mind. It’s much harder to start an exercise program than it is to keep up an existing one, so try not to stop. For most people, just 30 minutes of aerobic exercise a day is optimal. This can be something as simple as walking. Consider a gym or an indoor stationary bike if you’re trying to avoid frigid outdoor weather.

Visit a Chiropractor

The holidays are a great time of year to start seeing a chiropractor. Regular chiropractic adjustments and other treatments can help to reduce your stress, live pain free and fight off common winter ailments. Plus, your chiropractor can offer great advice on nutrition, relaxation methods and exercise ideas. Make chiropractic visits a part of your holidays and enjoy a happier, healthier season.
